Councils and developers relying on planning permission exemptions to preservation orders cannot automatically cut down protected trees, the High Court has ruled.

Deputy High Court judge Dan Kolinsky ruled this week following a hotly-contested case between protesters and North Northamptonshire Council, sparked by a contractor chopping down 16 lime trees protected by a preservation order.
