Philip Glanville has resigned as mayor of Hackney after a picture emerged of him at a social event with an ex-councillor arrested over child abuse images.
The photo with former Hackney councillor Tom Dewey was reportedly taken on 14 May 2022. Dewey had been arrested over the images on 29 April the same year.
The Labour party suspended Mr Glanville in August this year, and on 5 September he said he was temporarily stepping aside as mayor.
Today, he wrote to the Hackney Council’s interim chief executive to resign.
Mr Glanville said in the letter: ‘As I previously made clear I had my trust betrayed, but in turn I made an error of judgement and was not as transparent as I should have been.
‘For that I accept full responsibility.’
This afternoon I have written to the Chief Executive of @HackneyCouncil to tender my resignation, which has been accepted, please find a copy of that letter attached to this tweet/post. pic.twitter.com/EultQLgdhz

Interim chief executive Dawn Carter-McDonald said: ‘I want to take this opportunity to thank the outgoing mayor for his seven years of service as mayor and the 17 years he has given to the borough and its residents as an elected politician.’
Mr Glanville’s last day of office will be 22 September.
Deputy mayor Cllr Anntoinette Bramble will continue to assume temporary leadership, with a mayoral election likely to take place 'in the coming weeks'.
