Local government secretary Michael Gove delivered a speech to the Conservative Party Conference light on new policies and laden with election slogans.
His first references to his department’s brief came seven minutes into the 13-minute speech, while ‘councils’ or ‘local authorities’ were mentioned just three times as Mr Gove praised the ‘local heroes’ of local government - both members and officers.
Mr Gove paid tribute to his ministerial team, highlighting local government minister Lee Rowley’s efforts in ‘stopping the Lib Dem nonsense of a four-day week delivering poorer public services’ at South Cambridgeshire DC.
