GLA saves water with the Aquazura street washer

Westminster chooses Euromec.

The Greater London Authority (GLA) covers popular tourist attractions in the capital, including the famous Trafalgar Square. Recent issues surrounding the cleaning of this area by flooding and the over-use of
water drove Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London, to approach City ofWestminster & Onyx to acquire an Aquazura during the water shortage, from cleaning specialists Euromec.

MD of Euromec, Peter Crewe commented: ”Euromec’s Aquazura machines were already in use at Westminster. In 2004, the company presented Westminster with the 100th Aquazura to be sold in the UK.

Previously, the GLA had been using flushing vehicles and mechanical brooms to remove litter, dirt and stains from Trafalgar Square. These methods used up to 1,750 litres of water an hour. However, a 'hydrant-
use license' allows for a massive 334,000 litres a day, across Westminster's 22 sqkm.

This large consumption of water could pose a problem for the residents of London, particularly with concerns over serious droughts expected throughout the coming months. During prolonged periods of
dry weather, dirt and staining is more obvious to the public. Consequently, increased demand for a cleaning service arises at the very time when water should be conserved.

The Aquazura street washer from Euromec saves the GLA up to 20,000 litres of water a day. Five rotating brushes remove stubborn grease and grime. A 600mm wide suction nozzle and 1200mm wide squeegee
collects the litter and water as the machine travels along. Because the wastewater is recycled, consumption is much lower than with standard flushing machines. What's more, a 1,500 litre clean-water tank means the Aquazura does not require refilling during a shift. The debris is stored in the watertank and then the water is drained off via filters.

The machine is completely sound proof and has two adjustable seats. The roof and cabine are completely transparent. It features tinted security windows and sliding side windows, airconditioning and heating. Drivers can listen to the radio cassette player.

Peter reports: “The streetwasher is designed to work on a hard surface, especially flagstones, blockpavers and stone. It will clean right up to edges and corners due to two extendable brushes on the brush head.”
