Further devolution of funding is needed so that mayoral combined authorities can take the lead in delivering energy efficiency upgrades to homes, a new report says.
New research from the Northern Housing Consortium (NHC) sets out how the social housing sector can take the lead in delivering warmer, greener homes across the North.
Launched yesterday at the Labour conference, Warm Homes, Green Jobs: Meeting the Net Zero Challenge in the North calls for long-term consistent funding to decarbonise social housing.
It also calls for further devolution of funding so that mayoral combined authorities can lead the delivery of energy efficiency in their area.
In areas which do not have a devolution deal, the NHC argues that Net Zero Hubs could take on this role in partnership with local authorities.
NHC chief executive Tracy Harrison said: ‘There are nearly a million households in the North living in fuel poverty. Investing in energy efficiency improvements will significantly bring this number down, as well as playing a big role in helping us reach net zero by 2050.’
