A former employee of Gedling Borough Council has pleaded guilty to fraud after stealing almost £1m from the authority to pay off gambling debts.

Alan Doig, 55, stole £934,343.30 over nearly 20 years, between 2003 and 2022, while working as a senior finance manager at the council.

Mr Doig, of Bedale Road in Daybrook, pleaded guilty to fraud by abuse of position and obtaining a money transfer by deception at Nottingham Crown Court yesterday.

He was released on conditional bail ahead of sentencing on 2 October.

Gedling Borough Council said it had worked closely with Nottinghamshire Police to help with their investigation.

The authority said it was unable to comment further but would issue a statement after the sentencing hearing.
