The Department for Transport has published a toolkit to help local authorities transition their fleets away from diesel and petrol.

Published last week, the guidance is aimed at helping fleet managers identify which vehicles are suitable for replacement with electric vehicles (EVs).

It also looks at how to formulate a procurement strategy based on whole life costs.

‘To achieve net zero, greenhouse gas emissions generated by providing council services need to be reduced significantly, requiring zero emission fleet vehicles,’ the guidance says.

‘Operating zero emission vehicles (ZEVs) also demonstrates leadership on tackling air pollution and, due to their lower running costs, can generate cost savings for councils.’

As well as purchasing EVs and developing a long-term procurement strategy, councils should also be installing charge points at depots, reviewing the options for charging, and implementing supporting measures, such as driver and mechanic training.
