New research has revealed that more than six million people were turned away from their local waste disposal or recycling centre last year.
In a survey by insurance provider Churchill, a fifth of people said they had been unable to throw rubbish away at a tip over the last year.
More than a third of respondents (38%) said they had been turned away for bringing too much rubbish. People were also unable to use their local tip because they had visited too many times (27%) or they had brought items that were not allowed (26%).
In 2024, the law was changed to prevent councils in England charging for the disposal of small-scale DIY waste.
But almost a fifth of respondents (17%) said they were turned away from their local authority waste disposal or recycling centre when trying to dispose of what they regarded as DIY waste.
