The Planning Inspectorate has rejected a plan for a pizza shop in Newcastle because of fears over obesity.

In what is thought to be the first move of its kind, planning officials in the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities rejected an appeal by Papa John's to open the store.

North Tyneside Council had implemented rules to limit the opening of takeaway outlets in areas where a significant percentage of pupils were classified as 'very overweight.'

Data indicated obesity rates of 21.2% and 8.9% among year 6 and reception pupils in the proposed site's vicinity.

Papa John's argued that it offers healthy menu options, displays calorific values and does not fry products like other takeaways.

Additionally, the proposed site was more than 400 metres away from a middle or secondary school.

However, the planning inspector concluded that the distance from schools did not guarantee that children would not be exposed to the chain's products.

North Tyneside Council has been approached for comment.
