Councils to enforce business closures during Covid-19

Local authorities will be responsible for ensuring businesses and other venues are closed to safeguard public health.

The Government has confirmed councils will be fully funded to ensure pubs, cinemas, theatres and casinos are closed to restrict the spread of coronavirus.

Businesses which fail to comply with the order will be issued with prohibition notices by trading standards and environmental health officers, followed by unlimited fines and the loss of alcohol licences.

Local government secretary, Robert Jenrick, said: ‘We recognise the pressure the emergency COVID-19 restrictions place on small businesses, which is why the government has announced an unprecedented package of support to help businesses and workers.

‘But we must follow the medical advice. That means staying at home, protecting the NHS and saving lives.’
