The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea is aiming to sell off 14 properties that it purchased to house survivors of the Grenfell Tower fire.

In the wake of the 2017 tragedy the council bought 290 properties to provide accommodation to those who lost their homes.

However, due to the short notice the council only conducted limited surveys and ‘knowingly took some risks to complete sales quickly’, a spokesperson said.

The borough subsequently carried out a works programme to improve the properties and accommodation deemed unsuitable was never occupied.

The spokesperson said: ‘We are now recommending disposal of 14 properties because they cannot be brought up to the high standards we expect for our residents. There is greater benefit to our residents in selling them and reinvesting the proceeds in our social housing.’
