Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council has set out proposals to phase out the licensing of petrol and diesel taxis.

The Staffordshire authority has amended its taxi and private hire licensing policy so it is based on vehicles’ emissions and fuel type.

The first changes would come into force next April, when the council would stop licensing petrol and diesel taxis of Euro 4 emissions standard.

From April 2027, no taxis powered solely by petrol and diesel would be able to get new licences.

Existing licences would not be affected until 2030, when Newcastle-under-Lyme plans to stop licensing vehicles fuelled solely by petrol and diesel altogether.

By 2035, the council would only license taxis with zero tailpipe emissions.

The proposals will be considered in a 12-week consultation before returning to the local authority for a final decision.
