Kirklees Council is set to close a household waste recycling centre (HWRC) to cut costs after discovering that work needed on the site would cost £7m.
The local authority’s 2024-25 budget included a review of operating days at its five tips.
Following the review and consultation, it decided to close its Nab Lane site, which it said was the least used of the five tips.
Two other sites will have their operating days cut from seven to five, with all changes coming into effect from late autumn.
The council’s cabinet member for environment and highways, Munir Ahmed, said: ‘Nab Lane is not built to the modern split-level standards and would require significant investment to bring the site in line with the other four HWRCs, alongside other ongoing remedial works to ensure health and safety levels are maintained.’
He said the £7m cost for works was ‘unaffordable’.
