Council threatens fly-tippers with £50,000 fine

Residents in a particular area of Cheltenham have been warned that if they continue to dump their rubbish in the wrong place at the wrong time they will face a £50,000 fine.

Cheltenham Borough Council said that residents in this area have been putting their rubbish in a alley way rather than on the kerbside at the collection time despite the presence of signs forbidding the practice.

A community protection officer has reminded those responsible of the regulations concerning waste disposal. However, the problem continues, prompting the council to remind residents of the fines for fly-tipping.

‘The area is being monitored and as stated on the signs, anyone found to be putting waste into the alley way or out on to the kerbside outside of the collection days can be issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice of £400, reduced to £250 if paid within 10 days,’ a council spokesperson said.

‘If the FPN is still not paid, the courts will prosecute and this is when the maximum £50,000 could be imposed.’

The real lesson of Andy Burnham's Makerfield success, argues Dr Jonathan Carr-West, is that place – not personality – is the key to Britain's future.
