Households living in the North East will be hit with higher council tax bills than those living in the Greater London area, new research has revealed.
A survey of council tax by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) found that the average Band D council tax bill across England and Wales will increase by 5.1% in in 2025/26.
The survey, which was undertaken with Infoshare+, also found that the North East remains the highest-paying region, with the average Band D property facing a bill of £2,425.49.
Greater London continues to have the lowest Band D average at £1,981.46 – around £444 less than the council tax bill for residents in the North East.
Joanna Pitt, CIPFA Senior Policy Manager, commented: ‘Local authorities are caught in an impossible position, balancing rising demand for essential services against financial pressures.
‘While increasing council tax is never an easy decision, it is often the only option available to maintain service provision in the face of difficult funding decisions.’
