Council receives petition calling for elected mayor referendum

Guildford Council has received a petition calling for a referendum to be held on having a directed elected mayor.

The council had originally received a petition calling for the council to abolish the current ceremonial mayor in favour of a directed elected mayor back in May 2015.

However, as it only attracted 5,012 valid signatures, it was declared invalid.

The organisers have now obtained further signatures and have re-submitted the petition to the council, which is currently validating the entries.
