Sheffield City Council has been scolded by the regulator for putting hundreds of tenants at ‘potential risk’ after failing to carry out gas safety checks.
The Regulator of Social Housing (RSH) said Sheffield ‘failed to meet statutory health and safety requirements’ and concluded there was ‘potential for serious detriment to tenants’.
Annual gas safety checks were overdue for more than 800 homes, with some dating back ‘several years’.
Director of consumer regulation at RSH, Kate Dodsworth, said: ‘Sheffield City Council recognised it had failed to meet health and safety requirements and referred itself to us.
‘Our investigation confirms the council breached our standards and put tenants at potential risk.
‘We will monitor it closely as it completes the overdue gas checks and puts things right for tenants.’
The council has now put in place a programme to reduce the number of overdue gas inspections.
