Enfield councillors have approved an application from Tottenham Hotspur for a new women’s training facility in a public park.

Enfield Council has granted the football club a 25-year lease for 53 hectares of Whitewebbs Park, which will include all-weather pitches and floodlights, in return for £2m.

Council leader Ergin Erbil said the club had committed to improving ‘the surrounding green space’, adding the project ‘will bring exciting opportunities’ to Enfield.

Local residents have protested against the decision, arguing it unlawfully encroaches on public space.

A Tottenham Hotspur spokesperson said: 'We are delighted that Enfield Council’s Planning Committee has voted to approve our proposals. This is a special site and one we know extremely well being based next door. Our proposals will secure its future with a green use and ensure it remains an open and inclusive place for local people to enjoy.'
