Council first in Northern Ireland to adopt ‘menopause policy’

Derry Strabane Council has become the first local authority in Northern Ireland to adopt a ‘menopause policy’.

The policy, which was recommended by the Governance and Strategic Planning Committee, sets out guidelines for members of staff and managers on providing the right support to manage menopausal symptoms at work.

Lead HR officer Paula Donnelly said she hoped the policy would foster an environment in which colleagues can openly and comfortably instigate conversations or engage in discussions about menopause.

She also said the policy would ensure that women suffering with menopause symptoms feel confident in asking for support from a manager or Human Resources who may recommend a referral to Occupational Health.

It is hoped the policy will also reduce absenteeism due to menopausal symptoms.
