Council considers cheaper funeral service

North East Lincolnshire Council is considering setting up a new organisation to deliver an affordable funeral service.

If approved, the organisation would combine the council’s cemeteries and crematorium service with a commercial funeral company. The council said this would deliver better value for residents and provide new income for the council.

Cllr David Watson, the council’s cabinet member for environment, said a financial assessment of the business case is being carried out to explore all options for the service.

He said: ‘It will be important to ensure that the council obtains value for money from any proposal and that it maximises both the financial and non-financial benefits from a more commercial approach.’
