Derry City and Strabane District Council contacted the Northern Ireland Electoral Office yesterday to discuss the disqualification of a councillor convicted of child sex abuse.
James McKeever, 64, has been given a four-year jail term for eight sexual offences against a girl between 1981 to 1988. The victim was aged between seven and 14.
Mr McKeever, who was the former deputy mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, has also been placed on the Sex Offenders Register.
A spokesperson for Derry City and Strabane District Council said that under section 4 of the Local Government Act Northern Ireland 1972, anyone sentenced to a period of imprisonment for three months or more without the option of a fine will be disqualified from acting as a councillor.
The spokesperson added that the council will be liaising with the NI Electoral Office in relation to this matter who will then take the appropriate action.
