Cornwall has installed 184 electric vehicle charge points as part of a plan aimed to improve coverage in rural parts of the county.

Cornwall Council’s Drive EV2 Project had a target of 150 charge points, to be paid for through the European Regional Development Fund and the council’s carbon neutral fund.

The new charge points, which were installed and will be maintained by SWARCO Smart Charging, are contained in 92 charging units across 35 council car parks.

Cabinet portfolio holder for transport Richard Pears said: ‘This project is about bolstering the existing network by installing units in areas with limited coverage – rural areas where the private sector is unlikely to install their own chargers.’

Cabinet portfolio holder for environment and climate change Martyn Alvey said: ‘The number of electric vehicles on our roads is steadily increasing and the infrastructure must keep pace.

‘With this extended network Cornwall is now in the top 20% of local authorities for total number of charging units.’

The installations bring the total number of charging units across Cornwall to more than 500.
