Cornwall Council’s eight reuse shops have saved roughly 500 tonnes of waste.
The Kernow Reuse shops are located at household waste and recycling centres in Truro, St Erth, Bude, St Austell, Falmouth, United Downs, Launceston, and Helston.
With stock consisting of pre-loved items such as toys, furniture, and electricals, the facilities have made an estimated 100,000 sales of affordably priced items over the past 18 months.
According to the council, this equates to 500 tonnes of items having been ‘saved from the skips’.
The sites are run by the council’s waste management service, SUEZ Recycling and Recovery, with councillors confirming that additional reuse shops are to be opened in the near future due to their popularity.
Cllr Loic Rich, cabinet member with responsibility for environment and climate change, said: ‘It's fantastic that so many pre-loved items are being given a new lease of life through the Kernow Reuse Shops.’
Becky Parry, renew manager for Suez, which runs the sites, said ‘opportunities for reuse’ have been provided through the shops, which are ‘supporting the circular economy, and helping residents save money and reduce waste’.
She added: ‘Kernow Reuse shops' success highlights public support for reuse initiatives and shows how reuse can deliver environmental, social and economic benefits to the area.’
