Cambridge City Council has approved proposals for a unitary council with majority support from councillors.

The vote saw council members advocate for the establishment of a Greater Cambridge unitary authority, which could result in Cambridgeshire’s current seven councils being replaced.

The new unitary authority will include Cambridge and South Cambridgeshire, with Cambridge CC leader Cllr Cameron Holloway proposing the motion at a council meeting on July 24.

Cllr Holloway told the BBC that whilst the shift will take ‘time and money’, it is a ‘pragmatic and positive step’.

The approval of the motion follows the council’s launch of a reorganisation survey last month, which allowed residents to provide input on the three proposals for the region.

The Government is due to make a decision on the council’s reorganisation proposals after the deadline at the end of November.
