Bury Market’s indoor stalls, which contain Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete, have been closed for safety works.
Bury Council said it was working with the 49 traders who have been forced to move out. The outdoor market and fish and meat hall remain open.
Once investigations have been carried out, the council will announce what remedial work is required and how long it will take.
Twice voted the nation’s favourite market hall in recent years, Bury Market, in Greater Manchester, dates back to 1440 and moved to its current location in the early 1970s when the former hall burned down.
Bury Council’s cabinet member for culture and the economy, Charlotte Morris, said: ‘Bury Market is a national attraction and is rightly called the jewel in Bury’s crown.’
Cllr Morris said the market hall was closed ‘as a precaution’ and apologised to traders and visitors for the disruption.
