Brexit: UK votes to leave European Union

The UK has elected to leave the European Union, with 52% of people backing a Brexit.

People in England and Wales voted strongly to leave the EU in the referendum, while London, Scotland and Northern Ireland voted in favour of the Remain campaign.

Leader of UKIP, Nigel Farage, called today the UK’s ‘independence day’, while the president of the European council, Donald Tusk, said 'is a historic moment' for the EU.

The pound has fallen to its lowest level against the dollar since 1985, with early indications suggesting that the FTSE 100 will drop by 560 points.
