Boost for Yorkshire leaders committee talks

Local government secretary Robert Jenrick has agreed to talks on the role and functions of a new committee of leaders from across Yorkshire.

It is understood that the committee would not be a separate new body but a ‘strengthened and resourced’ version of the existing Yorkshire Leaders Board, which meets informally at the moment.

Under the plan, the Sheffield city region devolution deal would be ‘advanced to a positive conclusion’ but all councils will still have the opportunity to join any full Yorkshire devolution deal.

Sheffield city region mayor, Dan Jarvis, described the move as a ‘crucial step’ in securing additional powers and resources for his region.

Northern Powerhouse minister, Jake Berry, said: 'Today’s news represents a considerable step forward in our mission to devolve more power, money and responsibility back to the people of the north.'
