AS2013: Further cuts would be disaster for councils, says Unison

Further cuts to local government in today’s Autumn Statement would be a 'disaster' for councils, the general secretary of trade union Unison has said.

Dave Prentis called on chancellor George Osborne to ‘recognise the disproportionate hit local government has taken’.

He said there should be no further cuts in council finance and no more top-slicing of the grant to finance other government initiatives.

Mr Prentis said: ‘Local government is groaning under the strain of trying to deliver services with an ever-reducing pot.

‘It would be a disaster for councils if further cuts are announced.

‘A number could go under as it is.’
