Westminster defies critics over Nelson Mandela statue’s location

Westminster City Council came in for criticism last week after the unveiling of a Nelson Mandela statue in Parliament Square.

The original proposal had been for the statue to be erected in Trafalgar Square, but the council opposed the application.

Responding to comments from Labour MP Dianne Abbot that Westminster councillors should be ‘thoroughly ashamed of themselves’, leader of the council Sir Simon Milton said they had constantly welcomed the principle of erecting a statue in Westminster, but believed Parliament Square was ‘a more suitable location’.
