‘Significant failings’ identified at Cardiff Council

‘Significant failings’ across Cardiff City Council are expected to be detailed in a report due to be published at the end of next month.

An independent review by the Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA) has given its initial findings to members of the council’s cabinet but the full details have yet to be revealed.

Council leader Heather Joyce ordered the review after Labour took power last year.

She said: ‘The decision to invite the WLGA to undertake an independent review of the risks and challenges facing the council followed serious concerns about the state of affairs which we inherited when we took office in May 2012 and which were outlined by former chief executive Jon House immediately before and after the election.

‘The team’s initial assessment confirms that we were right to be concerned and that there are significant failings across the council which have been brewing over a number of years and which now need to be addressed.

‘The issues facing the council have been allowed to develop over a significant number of years and are not easy to solve, particularly in such a tough financial climate.’
