John Ransford, the outgoing chief executive of the Local Government Association, has said he considered his former salary package of £300,000 a year to be ‘high’.

Mr Ransford, who leaves the LGA shortly, told The Guardian newspaper that while some people in the private sector might have considered his controversial package as ‘peanuts’, he added: ‘I regard it as high pay’.
However, he said package – an annual salary of £245,000 and pension payments of £57,000 – was ‘not particularly out of line’ with other top salaries in the public sector.
Mr Ransford’s remuneration deal was hurled into the public spotlight last year, after the LGA published annual accounts. It prompted a critical response from ministers, which culminated with Mr Ransford appearing on the BBC’s Newsnight in an attempt to explain his role and package.
He has been replaced at the LGA by former Legal Services Commission chief Carolyn Downs, who will take home an annual salary of £169,000.
