Planning permissions reach eight-year high

The number of planning permissions for new homes has reached the highest total in eight years, according to the latest figures.

They also show the number of major applications being processed quickly by local authorities is at an all-time high with a record 81% decided within the required time.

The Department for Communities and Local Government said 253,000 planning permissions were given for new homes last year, 6% more than in 2014 and the highest total since 2007.

Planning minister Brandon Lewis said: 'Today’s figures are further good news for hard-working families and first time buyers wanting to achieve their dream of home ownership with constructions rates up and plenty of homes in the pipeline.'

The Government is currently moving ahead with the Housing and Planning Bill which it says will help deliver its ambition to build a million more homes.
