New town developments could proceed amid resistance from residents, says housing and planning minister.

The new town development scheme will involve roughly a dozen sites being selected from almost 100 regions proposed, with each new town reportedly consisting of at least 10,0000 homes, reported The Times.

At the Lords Built Environment Committee meeting last Thursday, housing and planning minister Matthew Pennycook said that whilst ‘local voice’ must be considered in the delivery of the scheme, the Government ‘would not hesitate’ to proceed against potential opposition if site development supports the aims of meeting housing demand and improving economic growth.

‘We want the active support of local leaders and communities, but be in no doubt that site selection will ultimately be based on what is in the national interest’, Pennycook said.

According to Pennycook, the project will bring 'forward the next generation of new towns’.
