Over £250 million to tackle crime, stimulate educational achievement and boost job opportunities in England's most deprived communities has been announced by Communities Minister Baroness Andrews.
The minister confirmed that over £186 million will be invested in the 39 New Deal for Communities (NDCs) programmes for 2009-10, and that a further £70 million is expected for 2010-11, bringing the total for NDCs over its ten year lifespan to over £2 billion.
In the last decade NDCs have made a real difference to communities, helping bring burglary down by 30 per cent, and boosting GCSE results by over 10 per cent.
As sixteen of the programmes draw to a close, other organisations including councils have committed to continuing their legacy - including helping people get involved in local decisions and securing buildings for community use.
Communities Minister Baroness Andrews said: 'The New Deal for Communities Programme has played a vital role in improving the lives and prospects of people living in some of our most deprived communities across England, from Plymouth to Newcastle, for almost a decade. "This additional £250 million will help the 39 NDC partnerships continue their excellent work as they invest in the future of their area, and leave a valuable and long lasting legacy.'
