Over half of all local authorities will no longer use desktop computers within four years, according to a survey of IT managers.
The survey, conducted by Intrinsic Technology, found that half of council IT managers said they would no loner buy desktop computers following the news that Adobe will be making its best-selling software a subscription only service.
Adam Jarvis, CEO at Intrinsic Technology, said: ‘The desktop computer had a good run, but it’s simply not suited to the way local governments consume their IT. Employees don’t want to be tied down to their desks, and the IT department doesn’t want to undergo costly and time-consuming software refreshes.’
Adobe will follow the lead of Microsoft Office in moving its creative applications to the cloud. Software will no longer need to be physically stored on computers, encouraging local authorities to move towards BYODs.
