Labour’s David Skaith has won the race to become the first York and North Yorkshire mayor.

Mr Skaith took 35.1% of the vote share while the Conservative candidate finished second on 27.3%.

This new mayoralty was being contested for the first time and includes Rishi Sunak's constituency of Richmond.

A Labour spokesperson described it as a ‘truly historic result’ saying they were ‘now winning in Rishi Sunak’s backyard”.

Felicity Cunliffe-Lister secured 16.2% for the Liberal Democrats.

Elsewhere, the Conservative's Ben Houchen won the Tees Valley mayoral election despite his vote share decreasing by 19%.
