A road was closed for nine hours after two tonnes of waste were illegally dumped in West Yorkshire yesterday.

Police alerted Kirklees Council to the incident on Cliffe Hollins Lane in East Bierley, near Bradford, shortly after midnight on 20 June.

The rubbish, which included rolls of carpet and a bathtub, was removed by the council before the road was re-opened at 9:30am.

The local authority will now examine the waste for evidence.

Kirklees Council's strategic director for growth and regeneration, David Shepherd, said: ‘We have a zero-tolerance approach to fly-tipping in Kirklees, and where possible, our team seeks to prosecute those responsible.

‘We would encourage anyone who spots fly-tipping taking place or has any information to aid an investigation to report it on our website.’
