Wiltshire Council will pour an extra £1m into its planning department this year to process applications more quickly and improve customer service.

The local authority said it was investing in more officers as it was ‘clear’ it needed to make changes and speed up decision making.

According to the unitary council, it is one of the biggest planning authorities in the country, processing more than 6,000 planning applications a year.

The council’s cabinet member for strategic planning, Nick Botterill, said: ‘While other councils around the country are cutting services and funding, we are investing an extra £1m into our planning service to deliver faster and better-quality outcomes for our residents and businesses.’
