The leader of Telford & Wrekin Council has welcomed the Chancellor’s Spring Statement announcement of a five-year £1.6bn defence contract extension.

It is estimated the extension will result in the creation of over 400 jobs in Telford and Wrekin.

Council leader Lee Carter said the announcement means the area will be able to continue its ‘long tradition of playing a vital role in supporting and equipping our Armed Forces.’

The Treasury is aiming to use defence spending to increase economic growth after Prime Minister Keir Starmer committed to spending 2.5% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on defence by 2027.
