The cost of providing asylum accommodation between 2019 and 2029 is expected to triple to £15.3bn.
Starting in 2019, the Home Office began to provide accommodation to those seeking asylum through seven contracts known as the Asylum Accommodation and Support Contracts (AASC).
The AASC was initially estimated to cost £4.5bn over a 10-year term.
However, according to a briefing note by the National Audit Office, the number of people being accommodated has ‘increased significantly’, driving the estimated costs up to £15.3bn.
