Bedroom tax hitting disabled say Westminster Labour Group

Over 60% of those affected by the bedroom tax in Westminster are disabled, according to figures released by Labour councillors.

The figures show that out of the 419 tenants paying the cap, 268 are also in receipt of a benefit with a disability element. Since March, rent arrears owed by those paying the bedroom tax have also risen by 9% to £47,564.

Paul Dimoldenberg, leader of the Labour Group, said: ‘How low can Westminster Conservatives sink in their quest to make the lives of the most disadvantaged families as hard as possible? Westminster is now in the grips of a very hard-faced right wing Conservative faction intent on making Westminster a ‘no-go’ area for anyone without money.’

The Local Government Ombudsman criticised the council last month for housing families in bed and breakfast accommodation for longer than the legal limit of six weeks.
