Nottingham City Council has hit back at claims its workplace parking levy scheme – the first in the country – has caused ‘chaos’ as workers try to duck the charges.
The local authority charges employers £334 a year for each space they provide in their workplace car park.
Many businesses as well as the council itself have passed these costs on to their workers, which has led to claims that residential streets have been clogged up with the cars as commuters try avoid the extra costs.
Communities secretary Eric Pickles slammed the council today, following reports of residents up in arms about the situation.
‘Rather than tackle congestion, it is clear that the Labour council’s new workplace parking tax is doing more harm than good, by clogging up the roads and causing parking problems to spread,’ he said.
