Wandsworth Council is considering a council tax increase of up to 160%, which could add around £800 to the average household bill, as the authority grapples with a £137m budget gap.
No decision has been made, but deputy leader Peter Graham reportedly said a three-figure percentage rise was likely, as the council faces a projected 40% cut in central government funding.
Wandsworth is one of six local authorities affected by changes to local government funding rules, allowing it to raise council tax by more than 5% without triggering a local referendum.
The council has been contacted for comment.
