Council chiefs have welcomed the introduction of Awaab’s Law, which mandates social housing landlords to address health hazards, but called for more funding to support implementation.
This legislation follows the tragic death of Awaab Ishak in 2020 due to mould exposure in his Rochdale home.
Housing Secretary Steve Reed said: ‘Our changes will give tenants a stronger voice and force landlords to act urgently when lives are at risk, ensuring such tragedies are never repeated.’
But Cllr Tom Hunt, chair of the Local Government Association’s Inclusive Growth Committee, emphasized that councils require sufficient funding to implement these measures effectively.
He welcomed the Government's commitment to a 10-year rent settlement but urged swift progress on rent convergence to address deficits in Housing Revenue Accounts.
Additionally, he called for clarity on future regulatory requirements so that councils could plan long-term investments in housing.
