A town council in Cheshire is awaiting the outcome of a decision that will result in its number of councillors being cut by four.
The plans being considered involve a possible reduction in Frodsham Town Council’s number of councillors from 16 to 12, with residents and a former mayor supporting the move.
A review into the reduction was first requested by the town council in September last year. This prompted a formal Community Governance Review which saw that every household was consulted, but approval from Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWAC) is required before any changes can occur.
A total of 148 people were reportedly on board with the idea, compared to just 21 opposing it and 24 expressing uncertainty, according to the BBC.
However, the town council later wrote to CWAC in September 2026 to confirm that it has reversed its stance and would like to retain its current number of councillors.
A spokesperson for CWAC said: ‘As the formal review had been undertaken and as the majority of respondents supported the reduction the officer recommendation is to do so. The report is being considered by the Community Governance Committee on Tuesday 2 November for formal recommendation onto full council in December.’
Frodsham Town Council has been contacted for comment.
