The Department for Education has selected City of York Council as a Children’s Social Care Improvement Team (CIT).
Following its appointment as a CIT, the local authority will be responsible for sharing its learning to help other councils enhance their children’s services.
The recognition celebrates the council’s successful work with children, young people, and families. It comes after recent progress made by York’s Children’s Services, which moved from a rating of ‘Requires Improvement’ to ‘Outstanding’ in one assessment cycle.
Pupils in York also attained some of the country’s highest Key Stage 4 and A Level results this summer, the council has confirmed.
Cllr Bob Webb, City of York Council’s Executive Member for Children, Young People and Education, said: ‘Being chosen as a Children’s Social Care Improvement team is a real honour and a significant national achievement for our Children’s Services Team and the wider council.’
He added: ‘It’s a real vote of confidence in the expertise, child-centred practice and leadership we have developed here in the city.’
As part of its efforts to continue developing its work, the council is taking a ‘leading role’ in guiding the national Families First reforms, which aim to keep children safe and within their family and community networks.
