Wolverhampton to cut 1,000 jobs in ‘dark day’ for council

Wolverhampton City Council is to cut 1,000 jobs by April 2015, in a bid to make savings of £89m by 2019.

Council leader, Roger Lawrence, said the announcement represents a ‘dark day’ for the council and warned large-scale budget cuts will impact on services.

Mr Lawrence said: ‘We have no choice but to make large-scale budget cuts that will impact on services and jobs.’

Mr Lawrence also warned that council spending would be strictly confine to essential services. ‘All existing services will have to be reduced and, if they are not essential or do not meet the stated priorities, they must stop altogether. Services that operate on a commercial basis will have to survive without a council subsidy, or else close,’ he said.

The news was delivered to staff at the city’s Civic Halls by chief executive Simon Warren.
