Think tank issues warning over social care precept

A 2% council tax increase to fund social care would raise a lot less than the £2bn suggested by the chancellor, a think tank has claimed.

According to figures published yesterday in a national newspaper from the Kings Fund, the new social care precept would raise only £800m for local authorities.

The figures claim the five councils that would generate the lowest amount of money by introducing the 2% increase are all in areas of high deprivation with greater need for funded care – Newham LBC, Manchester City Council, Barking and Dagenham LBC, Hackney LBC and Hull City Council.

In contrast, the five councils that could generate the most income are all in relatively wealthy areas – Richmond LBC, City of London Corporation, Rutland CC, Wokingham BC and West Berkshire Council.
