East Sussex County Council has formally launched a legal challenge to Government plans to reorganise councils in East Sussex and Brighton & Hove.
Council leader Andy Woolley, of Reform UK, said a legal letter was issued on Friday. The council later confirmed it had lodged an application for judicial review on a protective basis, to preserve its position on legal time limits while the Government's review continues.
Under the approved plans, Peacehaven, Telscombe and East Saltdean would move into a larger Brighton & Hove unitary authority, transferring 26,000 people out of East Sussex.
The process was paused in September by Communities Secretary Angela Rayner following legal advice. A government spokesperson told the BBC it would ‘set out next steps in due course’.
Lewes District Council's Green leader Zoe Nicholson has also begun protective legal action.
