City of York Council has voted to strip Sarah Ferguson of the freedom of the city due to her links to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Leader of City of York Council, Cllr Claire Douglas, said the Honorary Freedom was only bestowed on persons of distinction and on those who have served the City of York.
‘As the people of York would expect, holding this status requires upholding the values and behaviours consistent with such an honour,’ she said.
‘Those who continued to associate with Epstein after his crimes became widely known fall well short of these expectations.’
The decision follows a similar move in 2022 to remove Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor – then Prince Andrew – from the roll.
Hull City Council members also last year voted to strip Lord Peter Mandelson of his honorary role as High Steward of Hull.
